Now I’ve been to bigger conventions in different industries and can say with confidence that even with a crowd this large, the attitudes and politeness of the attendees are amazing. The crowds are enormous and the entire convention takes up almost all of downtown Indianapolis and has spilled over into Lucas Oil Field. Last year they celebrated their 50th Anniversary and broke records for attendance (well over 60,000!). Gen Con is the largest and the premier board game convention in the U.S. So many last year that we had to split up the list into two articles and expect to do the same this year! Keep watching for the 2018 debut list along with a new feature about deals and promotional items you can pick up while you’re there! Gen Con Our girls love making their own terrain for their friends during some of the artistic events and many new games make their debut at Origins. We were lucky to get a room in the host hotel this year, so no driving back and forth for us! We’ve gushed over all the fun you can have at Origins and highlighted a number of reasons to attend. In June we’ll make the drive to Columbus, Ohio for our third year of attending the Origins Game Fair. There are tournaments, fancy gaming night (wear your tuxedo!), a trade room, free games for attendees and even a flea market on Sunday! Probably the most relaxed convention we’ll visit all year! Origins Game Fair A small vendor area ensures there are new games to purchase and a few events keeps things interesting. For us it is the best “playing” convention in our area, hosting 2,500 people who are all there to do the same thing – play board games. conventions, Origins Game Fair and Gen Con, but recently realized we haven’t spoken much about the other great regional board game conventions that are worth the trek! The success of individual games has played a crucial role in that, and a few subtle marketing ploys, including the one-thousand-pound giveaway every day of the UKGE, definitely were contributing factors.īoard games expos have been making a return following the COVID lockdowns that cancelled out most of the events and limited attendance to what few were there. UKGE has asked rhetorically on Twitter if this record may be improved as well, and the answer is – most likely yes.Īs board game expos go mainstream, interest in them soars. This is not just a post-COVID recovery thing, as UKGE has now officially improved on its previous record set in 2019 when 25,704 unique entries were registered. The 10th edition of Warhammer 40,000 and Disney Lorcana were in themselves enough to stir sufficient interest and make people come down to Birmingham and see what goodies have been prepared for attendees. The overall number of attendance stood at 52,000, which marks the event’s strong draw, but also the fact that it had plenty of excellent games to show. The hype was, as they say, “real,” with 32,000 unique visitors descending on NEC and the Hilton to attend this year’s edition which resulted in the biggest turnup in the event’s history. The UK Games Expo was one of the biggest events on the calendar if you are based in Europe, and possibly beyond.
